IAB takes the pleasure to invite you to a Presentation on Urban Rainwater Harvesting
by Ar. Mustapha Khalid Palash and Ar. Qazi M. Arif on 01 July 2010.

GROUNDWATER level in Dhaka has dropped
down by 35m in the past 11 years. Ever increasing
water demand and uncontrolled surface water
pollution has also prompted people to depend
enormously on groundwater.
The fast sinking water table of Dhaka - the world's
fifth densely populated city, will not only aggravate
the city's future water scarcity, but also create a
vacuum in the aquifer. This will increase the risk
factor during earthquakes and could lead to
subsidence of the clay soil plate on which Dhaka is
situated.
Rain Water Harvesting in such a country, where
monsoon prevails for about 4-5 months of the
year, can be an effective way to store water for
later use and to recharge ground water as well.
The present and future architectural development
in the urban areas of Bangladesh, have got a
significant role to play in relation to Harvest Rain
Water and thus to mitigate the crisis to a
considerable extent.
Presentation will discuss the background and
present premises of water scarcity, options to
address the crisis and will highlight basics and
relevant technical issues of Rain Water
Harvesting in order to incorporate the idea/tool in
Planning, Architecture and Urban Design in the
context of Dhaka and other urban Areas of
Bangladesh.
