i was just goin thru architectural records a few days ago whn the topic of discussion was abt malls and the changing culture of malls into somethin wht they r terming as lifestyle centers.....malls actually started with the idea of placing two important or shud i say big brand showrooms on either side of a street(a small one with walkable distance between them) n then lettin smaller shops grow in the streets....since the two showrooms wud definitely catch the crowds, the placement of smaller shops in the route also gave them an opportunity for them to sell.....this all started with wht became the 'mall'......n now with growing needs n understandin these r further growing into lifestyle centres...... hope the info is helpful regards tanuj | ||

The Lake View Store was the first modern indoor mall built in the United States. It was built in 1915, and held its grand opening on July 20, 1916. The architect was Dean & Dean from Chicago and the building contractor was George H. Lounsberry from Duluth. The mall is located in the U.S. Steel company town of Morgan Park in the city of Duluth, Minnesota. The building is two-stories with a full basement and shops were originally located on all three levels. All of the stores were located within the interior of the mall with some shops being accessible from both inside and out. the most quick and authentic reffrence is wikipedia here goes the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shopping_mall#First_mall_in_the_United_States |

West Edmonton Mall is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the "largest shopping centre in the world" and "world's largest parking lot agin refference is from wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Edmonton_Mall and here i found another mall related site, i think this one too will help you to go for cool reading on shopping mall. http://www.easternct.edu/depts/amerst/Malls.htm as the above one is from a edu site i think they are authentic. here i mean to say 'authentic' in todays extensive marketing trendy business environment, any one you ask will say that his one is the most largest shopping mall. so avoiding all those advertisements what you need is pure reading material. or else who will say that his mall is not large enough to be the world largest? acording to forbes-another media giant specially in business and finance realted news they are quite recognized, here the story on largest malls http://www.forbes.com/2007/01/09/malls-worlds-largest-biz-cx_tvr_0109malls.html you can have the pictorial tour too. but the slide show seemed fast to me slow down the speed a little ,for better show.
