hello, apramita. In the semester 1.1 we did a project "transform music into physical composition". At that time I learned some aspects of music. Music is an art form whose medium is sound and silence. There are rhythm, pitch, dynamics, pauses, climax, maths and many other aspects to create music. And surprisingly there was many similarity between Music and Architecture. When we design, the similarities emerges to us clearly enough. In any kind of composition we follow those basic and unignorable tools to Compose/Design. good luck with your thesis. |

@Apramita: Is this an undergrad thesis or masters thesis? Do you have any (typically undergrad) requirement like ultimately you have to design a building or a built environment at the end of your thesis? If a built environment is your final goal then are you free to chose your program? If a built environment is not your target then is this your goal: "Exploring the relationships between music and architecture"? Do you want to end it... an essay or dissertation and/or a presentation sheet, models, live scale installations etc.? Anyone would need to know these details to start helping you! Would you please elaborate? |

@Neo-Hi thank you for your reply.would like to tell you that its an undergrad thesis and i am still in the third year.I have 2 years left for the thesis.but since the topic is so vast,i would like to start early. It is a design thesis and you are free to choose your programme.to start with i have started reading Music and Architecture by Xenakis and since i ve been in such an atmosphere since childhood,i am very much into music,i learnt how to play guitar 3 years back.well it is a design thesis but since the topic is so vast i would also like to elaborate more on the research part.i am specially taking a drop this year to work in COSTFORD and to explore more about this. Please let me know if you have any resources on the same...thank you | ||

There are two options: 1. Architecture FOR music and 2. Architecture inspired by or derived FROM music. If you are looking forward to architecture FOR music then you may think of a program like these: 1. Neighborhood music school for kids 2. A community orchestra theatre 3. A public place for practicing, enjoying, showing and celebrating music. 4. A prototype mobile van/truck that goes to rural areas or urban slums or schools to promote and train music. And if you are thinking of architecture FROM music: It's difficult to conceive. It will turn out to be more like a theoretical thesis than a project thesis. You may explore the relationship of rhythm and composition of music and architecture and come up with a 1. New design theory 2. A new proportioning system 3. A new adaptable design process of architecture from the analysis of music. Now it's your call to decide which way you want to go I just tried to put up some possible options. There may be more. Explore and discuss... Looking forward to hearing from you more. All the best. |
