im interested in making that (almost around) one not so popular old dhaka road , with three religious interesting co-existence for long time, into a RELIGIOUS CORRIDOOR! quite challenging and very new topic, so it made me so much interested. thats why i have got a hindu temple with sanctuary, two mosques, the largest and oldest (from 16th AD) christian cemetery in dhaka, the ISKCON (hindu community) complex, a large trustee organized madrasa and yatimkhana,a christian convent and a beautiful botanical garden and a more beautiful pond ina single not even road but a narrow lane, how can i believe this in this very world??? ![]() comparative study of religious culture, ofcourse very contemporary and with a intelect touch of philosophical background. |

As it seems your project is not only tough but also very risky for thesis (in our context!). In last semester one of our senior did a project on International Buddhist Monastery Complex at Badda. I was her kaamla. The entire project was functionally quite ok. But she was fired on jury just for the low integration of the archaic style temple at the center and rest of the modern surrounding buildings. Entire jury just talked about lots of religious philosophical blab bla bla and fired her project out. Risk is philosophical risk. I wish you handle it tight n right. |

The project sounds very interesting. However, other than stating a narrative of what is currently existing there, I am a bit unclear about what exactly is the "intent" of the project. What are you trying to do? If this is an architectural "thesis" (I assume, the final year last project) it has to be about a "built" solution. In that case, you talk about a lane. What exactly are you trying to do with the lane? Historic preservation? You should go ahead with the project as this is very timely and not run-of-the-mill topics. However, you need to focus on what exactly that you want to do here, what is the scope of your work. Then once you set your goal, you have to find out the most appropriate way to do this. Let's say you are planning to do a historic conservation. Is the place dying out? Why do you need to conserve it? What purpose do you think it will serve the society. Most important of all, if this place needs to be conserved, what is the main reason behind it? Why aren't the natural social forces supporting its continued existence anymore? Is what you are proposing to do going to solve the social factors and benefit them, or is this your personal dream of holding on to historic old buildings while the people who live around there don't want it? Well, I think I'll be better able to share my comments once you state more clearly what you are attempting to do and why. Aloha |

kaamla, means free lancers. when you are overloaded with tasks, generally few days before your submission, you know that you cant finish up everything by only your two hands, then you higher some academic junior to put some helping hand with you, may be in exchange of coc and burgers and surely lots of fun. then you happened to be their Amla, and the pupil works for you are kaamla. freelance volunteers. |

Neo, let me explain the Kamla/Amla thing more clearly: "Kaamla" (laborer) is a Bangladeshi tradition in architectural schools where you exploit the junior students to do manual work for you (draft/put together models/sketch/make 3Ds and graphic presentation/press your legs, etc.) in exchange for providing useful design tips. The bad part is - the senior gets credit for work he didn't do and junior gets design tips which he did not learn or understand but just blindly followed as the "amla" (boss/design god-father/ guru) suggested - therefore earning high credits for work which he did not do or understand. A thoroughly corrupt studio culture, that in Bangladesh does not give credit to people who really work hard and try to understand design, but rather reward those that suck-up to a senior and get credits in class by making seniors do the designs for them. Most of the "great" designers that you will see walk around with an air of pride would turn out to be the "kamla" of a high-graded senior, who in turn, would turn out to be a good copier of TadaoAndo/MarioBotta/CharlesCorrea/aesthetics (whatever in vogue or whichever magazine or book they happened to possess or the library had to offer at the time). ![]() |
