i am telling u in the sense of a building. The building which is made by local available material, easy maintanance, not so costly and climatic friendly is called a sustainable building. i am confused with vernacular architecture. can anybody explain that? is vernacular and sustainable same? |

basic definitions of these words- not from a dictionary but i think my definitions would do fine: sustainability: keeping available (sustaining) resources of today for future generations' use while continuing economic and social development, therefore not stopping using resources of the world but using them efficiently instead and not exploiting them with pollution etc. preferring renewables and considering long term consequences. sustainability is often illustrated as a triangle with economy, society and natural preservation on the corners- these have to work together, protection nature atthe cost of ruining economy doesnt make a sustainable world. sustainability within architecture applies to energy efficient housing, preventing the formation of urban heat islands and such climate hotspots through surfaces, using eco friemdly local materials, creating sustainable communities(socially), building disposable or recycleable buildings, causing less pollution etc. vernacular is soo not the same thing as sustainable, but often vernacular is sustainable. vernacular means local and unique cultural style. the architectural style of a region is built upon hundreds od years of heritage and therefore often rational. most vernacular architecture is climate efficient, using local materials because that is what was available throughout history, in harmony with the nature and topography of the region. even though itseems to make so much sense, vernacular architecture is becoming less common because old technologies cannot be used in mass production and adapted to new technologies. what architects are supposed to do is to learn from vernacular buildings and apply their principles to new technologies for a more sustainable site with identity. you could check out my vernacular housing thread, i still couldnt get those borind photos from you guys:) |

check out http://2010imperative.com/ and http://www.architecture2030.org/ for climate related issues do a google search on "urban heat islands" -the UHI effect to see how architectural surfaces make a ~2" difference in temperature between rural/urban areas (basic ways to prevent this effect: make lighter colored surfaces and roofs, use more vegetation) check out projects like bedzed and architects like ken yeang to see some innovative action research on the term "symbiosis of architecture and nature" for a nice approach as for materials, many solutions are available, for example steel structures can be undone and used in a new building after one completes its function for examples of using renewable energy, iceland is a great example, they heat their cities with the thermal water they have and use hydroelectric power for electricity, often use electric cars well i dont know what to write about, what exactly do you want to know? |
