There are several major skyscrapers going up immediately beside the Kaaba, including a 1,900' centre-piece. Debates are raging as to if these are appropriate, particularly given many historic sites have been destroyed over the years to make room for such structures. The other aspect of concern relating to 'Islamic Architecture' is building in a way that is appropriate to the area's context. What are the thoughts of people on this forum in this regard? The Saudi's have not consulted with the broader Muslim community on such construction. Is this an acceptable process, given the broader meaning of the site, and its importance to world heritage?

appropriateness is a moot point. this is disgusting and outrageous, an act of sacrilege at the doorstep of the holiest sanctuary. the crassest possible display of the unbridled pursuit of monetary gain.
nothing is sacred any more.
i'll refrain from being a doomsayer, but this is just another step towards the abyss...

These construction booms are always scary. Not just for the special premises like this one, rather for all the blooming cities.
These awful attempts of constructions ruined any cityscapes, cities I visited: Shanghai, a mere mess of mega constructions around the river, Hong Kong is a bit better although it is also heading towards an urban skyscrapers slum, Dhaka, is almost no more a livable city at all....
Hearing about Kualalampur, another mess of international architecture, Dubai, oh thats more scary... the list will be long....
